APPRECIATIVE INQUIRIES
for March, 2004

Appreciative Inquiries Newsletter by Corporation for Positive Change, Issue 3

CPC Consulting News

The American Baptist Churches (ABCUSA) has engaged CPC consultants Mike Mantel and Jim Ludema to facilitate an Appreciative Inquiry intervention to develop a compelling vision for the denomination that unifies the national denominational agencies in a common task, to serve the growth and vitality of all American Baptist churches – locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

American Baptists are compelled to engage in this listening effort because across the country there is profound uncertainty about what it means to be a "denomination" (for them and for many other church bodies). As consumer culture grows and para-church organizations multiply, many current denominational models are becoming obsolete; but the shape of what, if anything, will replace them is still unclear. A key challenge for the American Baptists in the early part of the 21st century is to clarify its new defining task and core identity as a denomination.

This massive communications effort includes thousands of interviews and a number of Appreciative Inquiry Summits. The results of these efforts will include: a bottom-up, theologically grounded, actionable vision statement for the denomination; responsive new strategies, initiatives, and ways of working that translate the vision into practice; and a process for on-going dialogue among national denominational agencies, regions, and congregations.

University of Kentucky Hospital/UK Children's Hospital is an institution on the move. Susan Wood is working at UK Hospital/UK Children's Hospital on an appreciative inquiry among staff of 1600 nurses. Called "Nursing Excellence – The UK Way", nurses and stakeholders (pharmacy, nutrition, etc) are changing the meaning of "The UK Way" from 'when things go wrong' to reflect nursing at its best. Topics are:
• Art of Nursing
• The UK Quilt of Teamwork
• UK Magnet Nursing
• Celebrate Life as UK Nurses
• Humor – a Vital Sign of Life
Leading the inquiry is Dr Karen Stefaniak, RN, PhD, Associate Hospital Director/CNO, and Robert Wood Johnson, Nurse Executive Fellow. The RWJ Foundation makes the project possible. Graig Casada, Nurse Recruiter, is a project leader. Karen and Graig went to the AI Foundations workshop in December 2003 to prepare to co-lead the inquiry with Susan! Twenty AI interviewing workshops are scheduled in the spring and summer, and three Summits in the fall, with an Integration Summit in January 2005.

Dear CPC: ongoing capacity-building, questions and answers

Dear CPC:

Kindergarteners in my private school classroom are somewhat fearful of the transition to first grade. Can Appreciative Inquiry be used with children at this level? If so, how should I go about it?

Mrs. Hilary Robertson
FRC School

Dear Mrs. Robertson:

We love the idea of using Appreciative Inquiry to help children make the transition form kindergarten to first grade. We suggest that you develop a set of questions and have kindergarteners and first graders talk to each other. Create questions that focus on discovering the childrens' best moments in school, their favorite activities and the new learning adventures they are looking forward to in their next grade..

Dr Jackie Stavros
for the CPC Consulting Team

P.S. Based on our feedback, Robertson invited the first grade teacher and children to have conversations with kindergarteners. Parents were asked to facilitate these conversations among the 21 kindergarteners and 18 first graders. The expectations were to discover:

  • What's Best in Kindergarten and First Grade?
  • What's Possible in First Grade?
  • What's So Great About First Grade?

The goal for the Kindergarten and First Grade Gathering is to combine creative energies to:

1. Discover the best in times in school,
2. Dream images of what first grade will look like,
3. Write sound-spelling sentences that will have each kindergartener embrace first grade, and
4. Continue to create a positive and nurturing learning environment for our children.

The following questions were used to guide the conversations:

Meeting a First Grader

1. What is your name? Why do you like to come to school? What do you like best about kindergarten? Can you tell me the story about your favorite thing in Kindergarten? (in the same group the same questions can be ask of the first grader)
2. What does your teacher, mommy or daddy or best friend say are the three best things about you?
3. What do you love most about your teachers?
4. When you are feeling best about your work or day, what do you love doing or learning the most in Kindergarten?

5. What is the most important thing that you take home to share with your family from Kindergarten?

Your Images of First Grade

6. Now, imagine it is the Fall 2004, and you had a wonderful summer vacation, what are you most excited about going into first grade?
7. (Parents will have magic wands), we will grant you three wishes for what you hope to learn in first grade. What do you hope to learn? What will it be like?

As we mentioned in our last NEWSFlash, our first quarterly conference call for registered Certificate participants and graduates is scheduled for April 1, and will be hosted by Amanda Trosten-Bloom, co-author of The Power of Appreciative Inquiry. For more information and to become a participant in this program, contact Corporation for Positive Change at 505 751 1232 or email: office@positivechange.org.

I'm thrilled with where the CPC Certificate Program has taken me. It's left me feeling really solid and grounded in AI: both competent and confident. Several other practitioners recently commented about how experienced I seemed to be. What a nice affirmation - both of me and the program!

"I am more and more convinced that we can truly make a difference in this organization. I am positive. I almost feel like this can be the biggest contribution to nursing and health that I will ever make in my career. I get so excited when I talk to folks here, that I am sure I am being somewhat of a zealot. But again the week reinforced my belief that Appreciative Inquiry is indeed a very good thing."

What participants are saying about the Summit:

I have read articles and books on AI, worked with practioners and participated in a couple AI sessions, however the AI Summit workshop is the highlight of all my AI experience. The workshop brought it all together for me. While the workshop is geared toward large group summits, the information and ideas are valuable for any size groups. I now understand how to use the flexibility of AI to fit particular situations. The AI Summit book is an excellent reference and has become my righthand for any AI work. I just wish I had a tape recorder for all the wonderful, inspiring stories and ideas I heard!

Annette P. McEnery
Human Resources Director
Experian

As an AI practitioner, I found the Summit workshop extremely worthwhile in helping me deepen both my practical and theoretical understanding of designing and facilitating large-scale AI Summits. I left the workshop with more tools and greater confidence about taking my practice to the next level in facilitating groups involving large numbers of participants. Thanks to Diana and Jim for creating an inspiring, thought-provoking and practical learning experience!
