CPC Consulting News

Ameriquest Data Services (ADS) is the 750-person IT organization that serves Ameriquest Mortgage Company – the largest provider of specialty mortgages in the US. Having experienced parabolic growth over the past three years, ADS retained Diana Whitney and Amanda Trosten-Bloom to help them design and implement an Appreciative Inquiry initiative to:

  • Establish an appreciative culture
  • Enhance profits through synergistic relationships and empowerment
  • Build commitment to the new organization, and
  • Design ongoing changes that will lead to exceptional performance and profitability through people.

Through three back-to-back summits, the consulting team engaged over three-quarters of the IT organization from each of its many locations (including an off-shore partner in India). This highly energetic, intelligent, and innovative collection of professionals, with spectacularly diverse cultural backgrounds, concluded each summit by self-organizing into action groups. In the end, they launched a total of 15 different initiatives, ranging from development of a flextime and telecommuting program, to implementation of employee-driven philanthropic initiatives, to development of a Web-enabled suggestion portal, to establishment of revenue-generating products and services. As the dust settles on this whirlwind three-month adventure, we look forward to the challenges and learnings that await us as AI takes fire elsewhere in the Ameriquest system.

Diana Whitney continues nearly ten years of work with the United Religions Initiative (URI) - a global interfaith organization dedicated to "promoting enduring, daily interfaith cooperation and creating cultures of peace justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings." Most lately, she has facilitated the Global Council's annual meeting. She will help represent the URI at the upcoming Parliament of World Religions in Barcelona, Spain where she will lead a session on "Best Practices in Interfaith Education," and facilitate the Regional gathering of the Asia Region.

The URI has just started a Be a Peacebuilder membership program. It's a great way for you to support the URI and to contribute to peace in the world. For more information on the Be a Peacebuilder program or about the URI in general, visit their web site: www.uri.org or phone them at 415-561-2300

Dear CPC: a source for ongoing capacity-building, questions and answers

Dear CPC:

I have an opportunity to introduce Appreciative Inquiry to a leadership team in my organization in an upcoming two-hour meeting. How can I "win them over" in such a relatively short period of time?

Barbara Johns
Consultant
Albany, NY

Dear Barbara:

We believe there are four important elements in a good introduction of Appreciative Inquiry, and that these can be replicated even in time-limited situations. First, provide a brief overview of the theory of positive change. Second, give people an experience of an appreciative interview – preferably tailored to their unique concerns or interests. Third, share stories of how Appreciative Inquiry has been applied in other organizations, and the results that have been achieved. And finally, allow time for people to talk over ways in which they might imagine applying what they’ve heard in their particular organization or business.

In our book, The Power of Appreciative Inquiry, we also suggest engaging a cross-section of the larger system in these introductions, wherever possible, and offer suggestions on how to do that. This helps people to experience the relational power of AI, in ways that are both personal and relevant to their organization.

Take these suggestions and adapt them to your situation and time frame. You are sure to win them over. Keep us posted on your success.

Upcoming Educational Opportunities

Learning Alliance Formed

CPC Founder and President Dr. Diana Whitney is a distinguished consulting faculty at Saybrook Graduate School and Research Institute. This affiliation has generated a new and promising partnership, which we are calling the Saybrook / Corporation for Positive Change Learning Alliance. As a result of this alliance, Saybrook graduate students will now be able to receive credit for attending CPC Workshops under Dr. Whitney’s direction. In addition, professionals attending CPC Workshops can apply for and receive Continuing Education Units from Saybrook. We believe this new relationship will further the development of both scholar practitioners and the field of Appreciative Inquiry.

With participation in The AI Summit Workshop, I now see how this wonderful, reaffirming methodology can be applied to Large Scale Change efforts. It's all-inclusive of not only the people, but also all aspects of where they're coming from, how they view the topic, and what they dream possible for the future of the topic. Staying focused on the possibilities is not only fun & rewarding, it's also engaging and creative in a way that creates the space for unanticipated outcomes. And, Jim and Diana are masters at it, which made it even more of a pleasurable experience.

What participants are saying about Appreciative Leadership Development Program:

This was a life altering experience. I not only got in touch with my strengths as a leader but really got in touch with who I've been "being" as a leader and what is effective about it as opposed to what I've been "doing" as a leader. I loved how we took the different data points and used them to take a look at ourselves and what we're up to as leaders. I am completely re-inspired as a leader and feel very supported and connected with my colleagues. Thanks.
