Welcome back to school -- and back to lifelong learning!

CPC Consulting and Speaking News

Morgan Community College in Fort Morgan, CO has retained Amanda Trosten-Bloom to facilitate a strategic culture change initiative. From October through February, full-time faculty, administrative and staff from five different campuses will interview adjunct faculty, students, local businesses, and other key stakeholders. The purpose of the inquiry will be to enhance collaboration and communication, establish a shared vision for the future, and build experience with AI as a process for fostering system-wide change. Upon completion of a two-day whole-system summit, volunteer participants in a Positive Change Network will receive AI training and consultation, so that they may implement ongoing organizational changes through a variety of grassroots initiatives. Stay tuned to hear how this long-term change initiative will unfold!

The US Dept of Health and Human Services has funded a five-year project to improve access to quality health care through appropriate distribution of the health profession workforce, and by building capacity to implement organizational features associated with attracting and retaining nurses in hospitals that serve vulnerable populations. The Hospital and Health System Association of PA and University of North Carolina have asked Susan Wood to partner with them in submitting a proposal under this project, using Appreciative Inquiry to enhance patient care delivery by improving retention of nurses over five years. Of 456 Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) proposals submitted, this team’s was one of 38 selected with a score of 97%. The innovative project will study how hospitals in six rural and underserved hospitals in PA can implement and sustain research-based changes in the organization of nursing work. Three capacity building activities are:

  1. Collaboration and communication among nurses and health care professionals
  2. Nurse involvement in organizational and clinical decision making processes, and
  3. Cultural sensitivity and competency.

Fall has been the time for Diana Whitney’s teaching and speaking!  Beginning in August and into October, Diana taught workshops and university courses in the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and Croatia, involving people from the US, Europe, and the Middle East. She’s also delivered the keynote address for the Colorado Council of Mediators and Mediation Organizations’ September meeting, during which they launched a system-wide appreciative inquiry to strengthen their organization and influence the practice of mediation.

The entire CPC consulting team is proud to have sponsored and significantly contributed to the Second International Conference on Appreciative Inquiry in Miami, FL. Jim Ludema and Diana Whitney gave countless hours midwifing the powerful design that we all enjoyed.  Diana, Jim and Amanda Trosten-Bloom delivered plenary addresses.  Jackie Stavros taught a pre-conference intensive. Susan Wood facilitated the Executive Round Table. And Mike Mantel, Amanda and Susan all facilitated Application Round Tables. By the way, the deadline for participation in the 2nd International Conference’s Virtual Conference has been extended to late November. Register for that conference today, and you can hear plenary talks and selected round table presentations, have access to the latest AI resources, and join others from around the globe in discussing new concepts and cases. Visit http://ai.bigmindcatalyst.com/cgi/bmc.pl?node=5859&frag=resp4#resp4 for more information, or to register.

Dr. Karen Stefaniak from University of Kentucky Hospital was one of four business leaders participating in the Executive Roundtable at the Miami conference. She talked about Nursing Excellence - The UK Way, an Appreciative Inquiry she is leading with Susan Wood as AI consulting partner. Karen’s moving stories about the exceptional measures nurses take in patient care, and about new graduate nurses who made a quilt reflecting their best moments in patient care, were greeted with spontaneous applause. The quilt will be a backdrop for storytellers at the upcoming UK Summit.

Having jointly received the OD Network’s Larry Porter Award, Diana Whitney and David Cooperrider facilitated the closing plenary at this year’s ODN Annual Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Porter award recognizes their contribution to the field of Organization Development through extensive theory-building and writing.

"Dear CPC:" a source for ongoing capacity-building, questions and answers

Dear CPC,

Can AI work in an organization that has been in the red for three years, in an industry that has changed dramatically -- and to which people have not yet adapted -- that has done major, painful cost cutting AND has a new strategic direction with an energized leader?

Sincerely yours,

Carol Cirulli
Central Pennsylvania

Dear Carol:

We believe that it is never too late to use AI. However, we also believe that AI for its own sake is often not the way to go. Instead, AI needs to be the engine that drives the business of the business.

For example, in the organization that you’ve just described, AI might be used to engage employees and external stakeholders in fleshing out -- or implementing -- this energized leader’s new strategic direction.  AI might also be used to transport financial best practices across the organization -- or into the organization, from other high-performing organizations that people might benchmark. (Visit the "virtual conference" Web site from the recent AI conference in Miami, FL to hear a presentation on this kind of project with the City and County of Denver:  http://ai.bigmindcatalyst.com/cgi/bmc.pl?node=5859&frag=resp4#resp4).

Finally, AI might be used to build a culture of participation and innovation, through which “problems” such as the ones you’ve described can be more rapidly and creatively addressed by those who have the answers. What we know from experience is that AI will inspire, engage, and unleash possibilities, and pave the way for necessary course corrections to emerge from the ground up.

With participation in The AI Summit Workshop, I now see how this wonderful, reaffirming methodology can be applied to Large Scale Change efforts. It's all-inclusive of not only the people, but also all aspects of where they're coming from, how they view the topic, and what they dream possible for the future of the topic. Staying focused on the possibilities is not only fun & rewarding, it's also engaging and creative in a way that creates the space for unanticipated outcomes. And, Jim and Diana are masters at it, which made it even more of a pleasurable experience.

What participants are saying about Appreciative Leadership Development Program:

This was a life altering experience. I not only got in touch with my strengths as a leader but really got in touch with who I've been "being" as a leader and what is effective about it as opposed to what I've been "doing" as a leader. I loved how we took the different data points and used them to take a look at ourselves and what we're up to as leaders. I am completely re-inspired as a leader and feel very supported and connected with my colleagues. Thanks.
